4 Home Project Ideas for Labor Day Weekend

Jun 29, 2017

What better way to honor Labor Day than by doing a little work? With the three-day Labor Day weekend upon us, it’s the perfect opportunity to get a few projects done around the house. These projects don’t have to take all day or cut into your fun and relaxation. Many projects can be done in a few hours that make a huge difference in the look and appeal of your home. Here are a few ideas for Labor Day projects you can do around the house this weekend.

Maintain Your Deck

Your deck boards can last up to two decades if stained and sealed properly. You also need to check for cracks and damage from termites regularly and replace damaged boards. This weekend might be a good time to get a power washer and wash your deck and reseal it before winter.

Upgrade Your Lighting

If you’re still using incandescent or fluorescent bulbs around the house, you could be paying too much on your electric bill each month. LED bulbs last longer and use less electricity than the older bulbs, so this weekend you could replace the bulbs in your house with new energy-efficient bulbs. The new bulbs may cost a bit more, but they can save you money in the long run.

Winterize Your Lawn

Your lawn is the first thing people see when they come for a visit or just pass by your house. If you know what type of grass you have, that’s the first step in picking out a fall/winter fertilizer for your lawn. If you’re unsure what to get, go down to your local lawn-care specialty store and get some advice. You may need to wait a few weeks to apply the fertilizer, depending on the grass you have. You can also pull weeds, trim your trees and shrubs and clean up any items that need to be taken care of before cooler weather sets in.

Clear Out Your Garage

The garage is often the place where things end up when you don’t throw it away or aren’t using it any longer. This causes clutter to accumulate and make the garage unusable as a result. This weekend you could clear out your garage of unused or unwanted items and plan a yard sale, donate to charity or find friends and family that might want them. You could also organize the items you want to stay in the garage with a hanging pegboard or some other organizational method to make it a presentable, usable space.

Whatever you decide to do this weekend, have a fun and safe Labor Day!
